Douglas Street Public Realm Enhancement Scheme, Cork

Project Details

BRIEF

Cork City Council has commissioned the regeneration of Douglas Street, Mary Street and White Street as part of its ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality public spaces for the city. This project seeks to transform these important urban streets into climate-resilient, people-focused environments that promote sustainable movement, support local businesses, and enhance the daily lives of residents and visitors alike. The proposals are currently the subject of a public consultation, marking an important milestone in shaping the future character of this area.

CONCEPT

CSR are proud to be part of the multidisciplinary design team, working in collaboration with AtkinsRéalis and John McLaughlin Architects. CSR’s input has centred on the public realm design, with a particular emphasis on integrating landscape-led biodiversity enhancements and sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) into the streetscape. The concept prioritises placemaking and community wellbeing, balancing functional improvements with the creation of attractive, inclusive, and enduring urban spaces. The enhancements will not only improve the quality and usability of the streets but also strengthen their environmental resilience, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Cork’s city centre.
