MARDYKE GARDENS AT FITZGERALD'S PARK, CORK

Project Details

BRIEF

As Lead Consultant, CSR directed a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers and conservation specialists in the refurbishment of Mardyke Gardens, a historic Edwardian park in Cork City. The project aimed to rejuvenate a much-loved but tired city-centre amenity into a vibrant hub for festivals, outdoor civic life and cultural events. In collaboration with Darmody Architecture, Punch Consulting Engineers, Engineering Environments and Michael Barrett Partnership, CSR oversaw the masterplan, detailed design, and implementation of a wide range of new features. These included an iconic performance pavilion, a new ornamental garden showcasing the elevated Pod from Cork’s Chelsea Garden Festival by Diarmuid Gavin, a walled garden and the restoration of the pond, historic fountain and riverside walk. The project sought to reinvigorate traditional recreational activities long associated with the park including musical performance, horticultural display and social gathering, through the creation of two distinctive spaces: The Front Lawn along Mardyke Walk and The Gallery Garden overlooking the River Lee.

CONCEPT

The design drew inspiration from the park’s rich heritage, most notably its role as host of the 1902 International Exhibition, which celebrated technological innovation and cultural exchange. Reflecting this legacy, the new Mardyke Gardens present a contemporary showcase of excellence in horticulture, performance and recreation, while honouring the park’s historic character. By blending restored heritage elements with bold new interventions, such as the pavilion and ornamental gardens, the project delivers a dynamic public realm that connects past and present. The result is a revitalised urban park that stands as a cultural landmark for Cork City, supporting year-round community use, civic events, and outdoor entertainment.
