CSR are pleased to have contributed landscape architectural and arboricultural services to an award-winning public realm project in Galway as part of a multi-disciplinary team led by Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates Consulting Engineers. The scheme, delivered by Galway City Council as part of its Active Travel Programme, recently received the Best Community Transport Initiative award at the LAMA All-Ireland Community and Council Awards.

Located at The Crescent and Sea Road Junction, the project introduced the city’s first rain gardens as part of a wider streetscape and road safety improvement scheme. The rain gardens were designed to capture and filter rainwater runoff from surrounding streets, helping to reduce pressure on the drainage network while enhancing biodiversity and visual amenity within the urban environment.

CSR provided landscape architectural design and arboricultural input to support the integration of these nature-based drainage features within the streetscape. This included developing the planting design for the rain gardens, ensuring that species selection supported both sustainable urban drainage performance and long-term resilience in an urban setting, while also considering existing trees and the overall landscape character of the area.

The completed scheme demonstrates how landscape architecture and nature-based solutions can play a key role in delivering climate-responsive urban infrastructure, creating safer and more attractive streets while contributing to flood management and biodiversity.
